Cultural competency is a vital skill for any writer or communicator, but people can feel daunted at the idea of infusing it into work. This talk is designed for those in the early stages of their journey to understanding the basics of cultural competency and how to imbue the concept as a foundation of communications. Ray Hatch will lead participants through navigating the steps (and missteps) starting their journey toward cultural competency. Ray Hatch works for the Office of the President at Illinois State University in Media Relations and with the new Interim Assistant to the President for Diversity and Inclusion. A writer and editor for the past 30 years, her work has evolved from media outlets to communications for higher education. At Illinois State she serves as editor of the campus newsletter, Identity, which highlights initiatives, research, and events geared toward populations that are often underrepresented. She serves as a member of the President’s Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council and the coordinating team for the University’s Educate Connect Elevate strategic plan. A longtime member of the Association for Women in Communications, Ray earned the designation of Certified Communications Professional from AWC’s Matrix Foundation. She serves on the Board of Directors for the YWCA of McLean County, and is an alumna of Leadership Illinois. Ray received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in American history from Western Illinois University. She is currently pursuing her graduate certificate in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Illinois State. Registration for this free event is required. Participants will receive a link to join the virtual meeting after registration.
