March 13 Luncheon: The First Amendment at Work with Julie Roosa, J.D., First Amendment Specialist, Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, Iowa State University

The majority of Americans support the First Amendment and its five freedoms, yet conflicts over free speech abound. Communications

professionals are often caught in the crossfire, especially in the workplace. In this interactive session, Julie Roosa from Iowa State University will share the current state of the First Amendment and what you need to know to help build a better understanding and respect for freedom of speech, press, petition, assembly, and religion on the job and in our communities.

Julie Roosa is the First Amendment specialist and an adjunct assistant professor at the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University. She serves as chair of the First Amendment Committee, which has planned the annual First Amendment Days celebration at ISU for the last 16 years. She teaches classes in the First Amendment, journalism principles, and mass communication law. Julie earned her law degree and master’s degree from Drake University and her undergraduate degree in journalism from Iowa State University.
